Korea Institute Supplementary Dissertation Research Grant

Each year, the Korea Institute will provide support to Harvard doctoral candidates, in either the humanities or social sciences, who are pursuing research in any field of Korean studies. Applicants may ordinarily use the grant for G5, G6, or G7, but only when other sources of funding are insufficient. It cannot be taken concurrently with dissertation completion funding from Harvard. Supplementary Dissertation Research Grants may be used for dissertation research and writing on campus or during field research in KoreaA student may receive this grant only once during their time as a Harvard doctoral student. This grant will match up to the GSAS 10-month stipend rate. This grant is intended to be supplemental to other sources of funding, and students applying to the Korea Institute for this support are required to apply to other sources of dissertation research funding as well.

Application Process

  1. The application process is via the online application system, CARAT. Please follow the CARAT instructions for the Korea Institute Supplementary Research Dissertation Grant, as well as, the specific Korea Institute instructions below.   2. Select the Korea Institute Supplementary Dissertation Research Grant to apply. After entering your info for this application into CARAT, including uploading a created, itemized budget, you will also need to upload your Resume, an unofficial transcript & a Statement of Purpose. Your two recommendations may be uploaded directly into CARAT by faculty, via a proxy or emailed directly to cglover@fas.harvard.edu by the deadline Friday, Feb. 9, 2024 by 5:00pm EST
  3. When filling out the online CARAT application, it is essential that you have filled out your G Year, Degree, Dept. and Citizenship. Please make sure to note if you are a US Permanent Resident. In addition, please make sure you fill out both the Title and Synopsis of your Proposal (even if it says optional). List the title of your research/dissertation title (even if tentative). Do not leave these fields blank. Also, make sure to answer the CARAT question, Have you submitted or are you planning to submit any other applications to fund this project, whether that be funding (partial or full) from other Harvard Centers, Depts. or outside funding.
  4. Create and Upload an ITEMIZED BUDGET in WORD detailing your expenses for the period/project for which support is requested, and the specific amount requested from the Korea Institute (e.g. $21,000 for 7 mos., Sept 2024–March 2025 and include city/state or city/country).  Separate sheet -- 1 page. NOTE:  You must inform the Institute if you receive any other award for this proposal after you submit this application.
  5. Upload a CURRENT RESUMÉ/CV- (Not to exceed 2 pages)
  6. Upload your HARVARD TRANSCRIPT (unofficial or official is fine) For an unofficial version, please go to my.harvard to print a copy of your transcript. With an official transcript, open it to make the necessary copies.
  7. Upload your  STATEMENT OF PURPOSE  This should not only outline the research to be conducted, schedule and research sites but also address the intellectual project rationale (i.e.: why your research matters).  Please also include, the month and year of expected PhD. Proposal should be brief, c.2-4 pages.

[NOTE: **PLEASE NOTE:  If you are planning to conduct research that involves human subjects (interviews, written surveys, observations, etc.), you will need to submit an application to the Committee on the Use of Human Subjects in Research. For more information on how to prepare and submit your human subjects research application, please visit the CUHS website. The Committee can also be reached at 617-496-2847 or cuhs@harvard.edu. Committee approval is not required at the time of your KI grant application submission. It is best to contact CUHS even before you've heard the outcome of your application.

8. TWO LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION  Recommendation letters may be uploaded and submitted directly into CARAT by faculty, via a proxy or may be emailed directly to the KI Coordinator, Catherine Glover by the deadline. Make sure to have your recommender denote which specific KI fellowship you are applying for. Advisor’s letter should indicate the current stage of the dissertation. 

9. If you have received previous funding from the Korea Institute, state grant name, year, and dollar amount. Be sure and fill this out on the CARAT Budget page. You MUST also disclose on the Budget page, what outside funding you have applied for and when you expect to hear back about the outside funding.
