Affiliated Scholars

Affiliated scholars contribute to the academic diversity of the Institute by participating in Korea Institute activities and by being actively involved in the Harvard community. The Korea Institute accepts a limited number of affiliated scholars each year. Affiliates are appointed without stipend, and they are expected to provide their own funding and living expenses while at Harvard and, in some cases, pay a fee. Applications received by the deadline will be reviewed by the Institute’s Executive Committee for appointments beginning in the ensuing fall semester.

Application Deadline: November 15.

There are currently three categories of affiliation:

Visiting Scholar appointments allow full-time professors on leave from their permanent positions at other universities to carry out a research project in association with Harvard faculty and facilities.

Visiting Associate appointments allow for non-academic professionals to pursue a research project of a scholarly nature at Harvard. Visiting Associates are expected to work closely with Harvard faculty, and are granted full access to Harvard facilities.

Associate in Research appointments are informal appointments for scholars living in the greater Boston area who work in the Korean Studies field. Most Associates in Research are professors at neighboring universities who wish to use Harvard's libraries. Graduate students and recent Ph.D. graduates are not eligible for this category of affiliation.
