Essay by 2019-20 Soon Young Kim Postdoctoral Fellow Douglas Gabriel Featured in Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) Catalogue

September 16, 2019

Douglas Gabriel (Soon Young Kim Postdoctoral Fellow, AY 2019-20) recently published an essay in a catalogue for the GanaArt Collection, a body of South Korean realist art that was donated to the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) in 2001, select pieces from which are now displayed in a permanent gallery space at the museum. SeMA curator Ayoung Kim writes that Gabriel’s essay, entitled “Reality Check: The GanaArt Collection’s Timely Lessons on Minjung Art,” reflects on “how Minjung [or, “People’s”] art and realist aesthetics remain relevant to our political and social realities today rather than...

Alyn Wallace, '19, Intern at CJ 4DPLEX, Summer 2019

September 10, 2019

In all honesty, I was not sure what to expect from my internship at CJ 4DPLEX; a strange combination of events meant that I was not introduced to any members of my team until less than a week before I joined the team. Because of those same confluence of events, I also had no idea what would be expected of me. I was told that I was the first intern this team had ever had, and, for a while, it showed. I’m not convinced that they knew what to do with me and I kept surprising them anytime I’d finish something quickly.

The first day at work I didn’t move from my seat because I was...

Ashley Jiin Kim, '20, Intern at CJ Freshway, Summer 2019

September 10, 2019

This summer, I worked as the Business Strategy Intern at CJ Freshway, a food distribution company within CJ Corporation. The Business Strategy team is an in-house consulting engine for CJ Freshway, analyzing current business problems that the company faces or possibilities of growth for the company, then creating short to long-term goals for the company accordingly based on market and industry research, data analysis, and strategic frameworks.

Throughout the summer, I took on a project concerning the possibility of a new business channel, which was to be a part of a new...

Geraldine Cisneros, '20, Intern at CJ ENM, Summer 2019

September 10, 2019

I vividly remember the first time I considered applying for the internship at CJ ENM and all the questions and concerns that others would voice to me as soon as I mentioned the possibility. I was a junior who had never delved into the entertainment or business industries and whose activities and classes solely reflected a trajectory in pre-medicine and psychology. My background and interests always led to the same questions from myself and others: Why CJ ENM? Aren’t you pre-med? Shouldn’t you be doing research for the summer? Why are you suddenly interested in marketing and entertainment...

A Graduate Student Perspective: Gangsim Eom, G2, Anthropology, KI Graduate Summer Research Grant, Summer 2019

September 10, 2019

Thanks to generous support from the Korea Institute, I embarked on exploratory fieldwork this summer. This research not only laid preliminary foundations for my dissertation, but also rekindled the initial joy that led me to anthropology.

Digesting and critiquing social theories during my first year at Harvard reawakened my passion for research. As I had been nestled in South Korean social fabric, I had flattened complex social dynamics which blunted my analysis of the social fabric itself. Although I was trained to navigate intricate social and intellectual networks through...

A Graduate Student Perspective: Peng Hai, G3, EALC, KI Graduate Summer Language Grant, Summer 2019

September 10, 2019

Going to Korea having read more than a few million printed words about the country was truly a journey bringing imagined foregone reality in constant clash with an excitingly energizing present. Such an experience on a personal level is perhaps comparable to a K-pop fan’s pilgrimage to Korea, “knowing” the country only too well through watching those hundreds of hours of K-drama and pop music videos. My first extended visit to Korea could have left me with much post-hyper-energy fatigue and disorientation due to the rich mental clashes between the imagined and the real. But thanks to the...

Albert Shin, '22, Intern at the ROK National Assembly in Seoul, Korea, Summer 2019

September 9, 2019

Having been born and raised in the United States for my entire life, I was much more familiar with the “American” portion of my identity as a Korean-American. Korean politics and foreign affairs were things I had barely any exposure to. I applied to the Korea Institute’s ROK National Assembly Internship because I thought it would be a good way to learn about Korean politics and foreign affairs, and deepen my understanding of Korean culture.

At the National Assembly, I was an intern at the Committee of Foreign Affairs and Unification (committee focused on the unification of the...

Anne Lheem, '21, Summer Research Travel Grant for Korea, Summer 2019

September 9, 2019

This summer, I spent a little over two months conducting fieldwork on South Korean beauty standards and its association with the rise in body dysmorphia and plastic surgery in South Korea, particularly among young women. I dedicated this summer to conducting key informant interviews with twelve South Korean women, all aged 18-28 and who lived in or around Seoul. My main aims of these key informant interviews were to better understand what kinds of pressures – if any exist at all – young women experience regarding their physical appearance, from where they receive such pressures to be “...

September 9, 2019

Coming into Harvard, I knew that one thing I had to do before I graduate was study abroad. I’ve always wanted to travel to another country and truly immerse myself in that culture. This summer, I was given this opportunity and was able to spend eight fantastic weeks in Seoul, South Korea taking classes, making lifelong friendships, and learning about the place where my parents and grandparents grew up.

One of the classes I took this summer was a Korean language course. Having already taken a Korean language course at Harvard, I can confidently say that studying the language in...
