Douglas Gabriel (Soon Young Kim Postdoctoral Fellow, AY 2019-20) recently published an essay in a catalogue for the GanaArt Collection, a body of South Korean realist art that was donated to the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) in 2001, select pieces from which are now displayed in a permanent gallery space at the museum. SeMA curator Ayoung Kim writes that Gabriel’s essay, entitled “Reality Check: The GanaArt Collection’s Timely Lessons on Minjung Art,” reflects on “how Minjung [or, “People’s”] art and realist aesthetics remain relevant to our political and social realities today rather than serving solely as vestiges of a now distant time and place.”
