The Executive Committee of the Korea Institute endorses a formal statement written by Professors Carter Eckert and Andrew Gordon in response to the recent publication by Harvard Law School Professor J. Mark Ramseyer. In doing so, we wish to amplify two crucial points at the heart of our mission at Korea Institute: to understand the historical context of events of significance to the region and population, and to establish this understanding through the scholarship of the highest quality and integrity.
We would also like to draw your attention to an article published by Harvard Law School Professor Jeannie Suk Gersen that summarizes the response by the academic community to Professor Ramseyer’s article. Professor Gersen’s article has subsequently been translated into Korean and Japanese.
The Korea Institute seeks to promote intellectual exchange and discussion that is both informative and civil. We affirm our unequivocal condemnation of hate speech, harassment, and intimidation in any of its forms.
학문적 진실성에 대한 성명
하버드 한국학연구소 운영위원회는 최근 발표된 하버드 로스쿨 제이 마크 램자이어 교수의 논문에 대해 카터 에커트 교수와 앤드류 고든 교수가 낸 성명을 지지한다. 그에 더해 우리는 한국학연구소의 사명의 핵심과 관련된 두 가지 중요한 점을 부연하고자 한다. 첫째, 지역과 주민에 대한 사건의 중요성은 역사적 맥락에서 이해되어야 하며, 둘째, 이것은 높은 수준의 연구의 질과 진실성을 갖춘 학문을 통해 규명되어야 한다.
우리는 또한 하버드 로스쿨 석지영 교수가 램자이어 교수의 논문에 대하여 학계의 반응을 요약해 발표한 기고문에 주목하기를 바란다. 석 교수의 기고문은 최근 한국어와 일본어로도 번역되었다.
한국학연구소는 유익하고 건설적인 지적 교류와 토론을 추구한다. 동시에 우리는 어떠한 형태로든 이뤄지는 혐오 발언, 괴롭힘, 위협 등에 단호히 반대함을 분명히 한다.
