The past eight weeks have been a whirlwind of personal growth, cultural immersion, and unforgettable experiences that I am incredibly grateful for!

The opportunity to study abroad has always been a dream of mine. This summer, that dream became a reality as I found myself in the heart of Seoul, South Korea, exploring, learning, and forging lifelong friendships. What I had initially believed to be primarily an academic pursuit quickly transformed into a profound connection with people, places, and a culture I would have otherwise never experienced!

One of the two courses I enrolled in this summer was a Korean language class, and the
experience of learning the language in its native environment was an adventure like no other.
From attempting to order meals with animated gestures to singing my heart out at local
noraebangs (Korean karaoke rooms), every moment became a chance to put my language skills
to the test. The progress I made was remarkable. I went from struggling with phrases to engaging
in full conversations! By the end of the program, I could proudly score a 100 on BTS’s Mic Drop
at noraebang. In our second class, a government course focused on the North Korean regime, I
stepped into uncharted territory as a first-time government student. What I discovered was a
world of insights and perspectives that stretched my intellectual horizons. Whether analyzing
primary sources on North Korean economy, delving into the complexities of China-North Korea
relations, or absorbing the narratives of defectors, I found myself developing critical thinking
skills that extended far beyond the classroom.

My days outside of class were immersed in the vibrant tapestry of Korean culture. From
exploring iconic sites such as Gyeongbokgung palace, dressed in a traditional Korean hanbok, to
shopping along the streets of Hongdae, I experienced various facets of the lively and dynamic
lifestyle of Korea firsthand. The thoughtfully curated cultural field trips took us on a journey
beyond textbooks, providing an intimate glimpse into Korea's history and present.

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the program, though, was the way it brought
together students from various backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives, Ewha and Harvard alike.
The friendships that I built over the course of 8 weeks, solidified through late night ice cream
runs and weekend outings, were truly a gift. We discovered not only our shared passion for
learning but also a genuine appreciation for each other's unique experiences and heritage. I’ve
already made plans with some students to reunite this year!

My heartfelt gratitude goes to the donors at the Korea Insititute. Your generosity enabled
me to embark on a transformative journey that has reshaped my perspective, deepened my
academic pursuits, and introduced me to remarkable individuals. This summer has etched an
extraordinary chapter in my life, and I express my deepest appreciation for your support!
