Thank you very much for the amazing opportunity to visit and study in South Korea. As a Korean American I have never been to Korea and it is thanks to Harvard’s Korean Institute’s scholarship that I was able to have this wonderful experience. To be immersed in the culture while studying was fun, and unforgettable.

Upon arrival, SNU’s Ki-Seok Lee was very friendly and willing to help in any way that he could. He helped me set up the classes that I would be taking and personally drove me to my dorm, which was about a fifteen minute drive by bus from campus. The living situation was incredibly comfortable with all necessities provided for. What immediately struck me about the rooms was the space efficiency. Within my relatively small single I had a washer, a full kitchen, a bathroom, a bed, desk, refrigerator and a wardrobe.

I took three classes during the program, Korean Language, Art and Popular Culture in Korea, and an art class. The classes were each three hours long with a ten minute break every hour. All the teachers were very friendly, passionate and knowledgeable. In particular, I found that both of the Korean teacher’s went above and beyond, making the lessons much easier and exciting. In Art and Popular Culture we watched Korean film’s and saw how they reflected the changing culture in Korea. For example, we watched 200 Pound Beauty which emphasizes Korea’s obsession with plastic surgery. Lastly, my art class was very relaxing and we learned about pottery and painting.

SNU took us on two extracurricular field trips. We went to Gyeongbokgung Palace, and Chunju. These trips allowed us to be immersed in the culture which was exactly what I was looking for. During the duration of the trip I was able to make numerous friends who I am still in touch with now and look forward to visiting soon. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the program and want to thank you again for this opportunity.
