After having studied the Korean language prior to this summer, I applied to KI’s internship program with the hope that I would have the opportunity to further my language skills while gaining work experience in a field I have long been interested in: journalism. My internship at The Korea Herald and the time I spent in Korea as a whole was not only enriching but made for the most satisfying summer experience I have had as a Harvard student.

At the Korea Herald, I was assigned to the national desk, where I covered stories dealing with expat living and artistic and cultural events taking place across the Korean peninsula. From exploring the expat film community in Korea through the perspective of an American-born filmmaker who juggles his passion for cinema with his day job as an English instructor to writing a fundraising story for a Tanzanian lymphoma patient receiving treatment in Korea, the stories I reported were not only varied.

Rather, they were also particularly insightful in helping me see the many faces of modern Korea which has ever-increasingly become a hot spot for travelers looking for experiences and services that go beyond what their homelands offer.

While at Korea Herald, I also worked with copy editors in proofreading and formatting the stories for the purpose of making them presentable to the paper’s international audience. In the office, I was moved by the diligence of the writers who so aptly constructed their news reports with remarkable professionalism and impeccability.

Both inside and outside of the office, I was impressed by the hospitality of Korean people and the evidently beautiful merging of Korea’s cultural traditions with its modern innovations. This summer, I gained much more value out of my internship beyond work experience. I finally gained a first-hand look into a society that I had before only come to admire through books and hearsay.

I am deeply grateful for KI and its donors for giving me the best internship experience I have had to date—it was truly what I would call the “full package”, particularly in terms of skill-building, cultural exposure, and fun. I will be counting down the days until I can return to Korea!
