Isabella Ohr, ’29, Undeclared, Seoul National University-International Summer Program (SNU-ISP) (Tuition Waiver), Summer 2026

This summer, I received the Korea Institute’s Seoul National University International Summer Program Grant. I chose to focus on improving my Korean language skills. It was such a rewarding experience seeing how I was able to get closer to the members of my team on my independent internship and collaborate better as my language skills improved.   
  
The SNU class sizes were very small and there was a large emphasis placed on speaking and listening. We would be quizzed everyday, and the quizzes would alternate between speaking quizzes and grammar/vocabulary quizzes. In addition, our professors would alternate every day, so it was great to become accustomed to different dialects. The Korean classes we were taking focused primarily on helping us communicate with other students and get around the city.   
  
I think one of the most rewarding experiences I had in Korea involved art. I hadn’t thought about how much Koreans value artwork and history until this trip. Korea implemented favorable tax exemptions to artwork, which has incentivized local artists to create more and also has incentivized importing art as it is exempt from VAT. I loved seeing the ceramics in particular. Seeing how ceramics has changed over the years and throughout the dynasties was truly incredible. I loved searching through different districts and finding new art pieces and paintings.   
  
Finally, I thought that experiencing corporate life in Korea, in addition to learning Korean, was extremely rewarding. Using the different levels of formalities in real life scenarios and getting new vocab words from my manager at my internship was incredibly helpful in making sure I was able to learn as much Korean as I could!
