# Ashley Kim, ’27, Biomedical Engineering & Neuroscience, Undergraduate Research Assistantship, Summer 2026 September 02, 2026 ![Ashley Kim Photo](/sites/g/files/omnuum10896/files/styles/hwp_16_9__480x270/public/2026-09/Ashley%20Kim.JPG?itok=HvIKQKrw) **Ashley Kim**, ’27, Biomedical Engineering & Neuroscience, Undergraduate Research Assistantship working on joint faculty project with Prof. Jungyoon Kim, GSD and Prof. Nicholas Harkness on a Book Project, "*Designers of Mountain and Water*” This summer, I worked as a research assistant for Professors Jungyoon Kim and Nicholas Harkness on their forthcoming book project, Designers of Mountain and Water. Although my work was conducted remotely, the project gave me the opportunity to learn more about Korean culture, landscape architecture, and the process of transforming academic conversations into a polished publication. My work involved transcribing recorded panel discussions, carefully editing and refining those transcripts for publication, and helping prepare materials for the later stages of book design. One of the most valuable parts of the experience was seeing the publication process unfold step by step. Working from raw recordings to edited transcripts and eventually toward materials prepared for design gave me a much stronger understanding of how ideas are shaped for publication. I learned how much attention must be given not only to the content itself, but also to language, structure, visual presentation, and preserving the individual voices of different scholars and speakers throughout the editing process. At the same time, engaging closely with the panel discussions introduced me to perspectives on Korean landscape, architecture, culture, and design that were very different from my usual academic work. I especially enjoyed learning about Korea through the perspectives of designers and scholars while also gaining hands-on experience with the editorial and design process behind an academic publication. Overall, this assistantship broadened my understanding of interdisciplinary scholarship and gave me valuable experience in transcription, editing, and publication design.
