Dr. Hyun Jae Yoo is an Associate Professor in the Department of History Education at Gyeongsang National University. He received his B.A. in History from Hallym University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Korean History from Seoul National University. His research focuses on the economic and social history of late Chosŏn Korea, with particular attention to currency, fiscal institutions, and the ways in which monetary systems shaped the operation of premodern society. His doctoral dissertation examined the circulation of Sangpyeong Tongbo, the principal coinage of late Chosŏn Korea, and its fiscal role. By approaching premodern currency not simply as a medium of exchange but as an institution embedded in social and political relations, his research explores how the circulation and use of money can illuminate the broader mechanisms through which late Chosŏn society was organized and governed. As a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the Korea Institute, Harvard University, he will expand this research into a comparative and transregional study of monetary systems in East Asia from the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries, focusing on Korea, China, and Japan. His project investigates how money was produced, circulated, and managed across East Asia and how different political and economic institutions shaped monetary practices. Moving beyond currency itself, the project also examines trade and understandings of economic activity contemporaneous to this period in order to explore the broader relationship between money, state institutions, and economic change in early modern East Asia.
