2019 OIE International Photo Contest- Special Korea Institute Prize

On Friday, February 7, 2020 in the Lamont Forum Room in Lamont Library, the winners of the 16th Annual International Photo Contest were chosen. This award ceremony and reception was hosted by the Office of International Education (OIE). The photographs are from Harvard College students who have studied, worked, interned or done research abroad in the past year.

1. The Korea Institute Special Prize was awarded to Ana Mundaca, Class of 2022 from Lowell House with her photograph entitled ”The Demilitarized Zone, ROK.” Ana was on our Summer 2019 HSS-Korea Program.

Ana's reflections on her winning photo: “This summer in Seoul was an incredibly fluid experience, with new rockets being launched from the DPRK (North Korea) nearly every week. With all the cynical reporting and academic articles we were reading related to North and South Korean relation, and seeing the general fear and discomfort North Korean behavior caused some of my Korean classmates, it was easy to forget the fundamental human connection between the two countries. This decorated fence, located in the Demilitarized Zone, was put up by international and South Korean visitors, and written on them were messages of empathy and hope for the North Koreans. It reminded me of how even in the most desperate and violent of times, human empathy can subvert borders and division to move towards peace.”
