2017 Harvard Summer School in Seoul Program

Start to research your summer plans for Korea! Talk it over with your family over the Thanksgiving or Winter Break. The 2017 Harvard Summer School in Seoul Program online application is due: Thursday, January 26, 2017 .

Visit the Harvard Summer School Website: http://www.summer.harvard.edu/programs/study-abroad/seoul-korea  for all the details and the online application. (Application goes live in early December.)

Dates for the Program are: Mon. June 19 - Sat. Aug 12, 2017  (8 weeks).  The Harvard Summer School in Korea Program is open to college undergraduates, usually rising sophomores, juniors in good standing. The theme for 2017 is Korea Reborn: Postwar Korea as Seen Through Film and Learning Korean Language!

This cinema course examines Korea as it emerged from the Korean War (1950-‐1953), and how artists, writers, and film directors began to address the effects of the nation’s recovery and rapid modernization. Through periods of dictatorship and democracy, Korean filmmakers produced memorable and powerful narratives. With film screenings, visits by guest speakers, through classroom discussion and excursions to modern and traditional sites in Korea, this course will examine the cultural ramifications of Korea’s social, economic, and political shifts since the mid-‐twentieth century and their legacy on contemporary society as seen through film. In addition to the course on Korean film, students will study Korean language for credit. Multi-track instruction in Korean language [KORE S-Ba, KORE S-120a, KORE S-130a, KORE S-140-a and KORE S-150a] reinforces language skills and enriches students’ understanding of Korean culture. Students need not have prior experience with Korean language.

Another unique feature of this intensive, team centered study abroad program in the dynamic city of Seoul, is the inclusion of an approximately equal number of Korean students from local universities in Seoul. Contact with Korean counterparts in class and in the dormitory offers a far deeper immersion experience and a direct avenue to life in Seoul as a college student.

We encourage you to apply to this exciting Harvard Summer School in Seoul Program if you are at all interested in Korean postwar cinema, learning Korean language, and experiencing Korea first hand.
