**Korea Institute Undergraduate Summer Research Travel Grants**

Korea Institute Undergraduate Summer Research Travel Grants are awarded to Harvard undergraduates in the humanities or social sciences **related to a senior honors thesis on a topic related to Korea/Korean studies for research in Korea**. The KI award covers the cost of travel and research-related expenses for the research project. **This funding may not fund the hiring of research assistants, nor payment to interviewees. Proposals for** research not related to a senior thesis are not eligible for this program.  
  
Applicants must be in good academic standing and have completed at least two years of Korean language study or have comparable proficiency. In the case of exceptionally strong projects, more limited language background may be considered. **It is important that applicants begin drafting research proposals early, in close consultation with their thesis advisor(s).** Applicants should provide their recommenders a copy of their proposal before letters of recommendation are written.

The CARAT application also requires a resume, unofficial transcript from my.harvard, statement of purpose, and two recommendation letters. Recommendation letters may be uploaded and submitted directly into CARAT by faculty recommenders or emailed to the KI Coordinator Catherine Glover (<cglover@fas.harvard.edu>) by the deadline. **Letters written by faculty are preferred.**

## **Application Instructions:**

Fill out all of the CARAT pages, including the online CARAT budget. Make sure to answer the CARAT question, Have you submitted or are you planning to submit any other applications to fund this project, whether that be funding (partial or full) from other Harvard Centers, Depts. or outside funding.  
  
Documents to be uploaded:

\- Current one-page resume.

\- Proposal (up to 750 words) outlining the project and the rationale.

\- Current Unofficial Transcript (PDF). Unofficial transcripts may be printed from my.harvard, scanned as a PDF, and uploaded.

\- Letters of Recommendation: Two recommendation letters (PDF format) may be uploaded and submitted directly by recommenders to CARAT or emailed to the KI Coordinator Catherine Glover (<cglover@fas.harvard.edu>) by the deadline. **Recommendation letters should indicate the specific KI grant name** (i.e. Korea Institute Undergraduate Summer Research Grant).

Additional Application Considerations:

- **Applicants must be in good academic standing**. **You are ineligible to apply if you are on a Leave of Absence during Spring Term.**
- **Research proposals involving human subjects (interviews, written surveys, observations, etc.) must undergo a Committee on the Use of Human Subjects (CUHS) review using the URTP (Undergraduate Research Training Program) Decision Form.** The URTP Decision Form is a Qualtrics survey that will (a) guide applicants through the process to determine if IRB (Harvard University Institutional Review Board) review is required for the research proposal and (b) indicate if next steps are needed. The Committee may also be reached at 617-496-2847 or <cuhs@harvard.edu>. **CUHS committee approval is** ***not*** **required at the time of your KI grant application submission.** **Applicants are urged to contact CUHS as soon as possible. It is recommended that students start this process very soon after submitting your KI grant application and keep the Korea Institute updated on any CUHS/IRB results.**
- Applicants must inform the Korea Institute of any other awards received after submitting this application.

**Harvard College Summer Funding Policy 2026**

Harvard College prioritizes the wide distribution of Summer funding to ensure that as many undergraduate students as possible can have a meaningful summer experience.

For funded Summer 2026 experiences, students may only apply Harvard University funding to **one** Summer experience\*, regardless of duration of time (ex. only four weeks or a part-time effort). Co-funding between multiple sources of funding is discouraged and only permitted if the funding jointly supports the same Summer experience.

Once a student accepts an award from any Harvard office, it is binding. The student will automatically be removed from consideration for other Harvard-funded opportunities.

Exceptions to the Summer Funding Policy are uncommon and will be reviewed on an individual basis; students should send exception requests to the Director of Summer Funding Opportunities at <summerfunding@fas.harvard.edu>. All exceptions will be approved by the Summer Funding Opportunities Office.

Failure to adhere to the Harvard College Summer funding policy may result in a student being referred to the Administrative Board or Honor Council.

*\* The only recognized deviation from the Summer Funding Policy applies to students conducting senior thesis research. Students in this specific situation **may** apply Harvard University funding to two different opportunities, given that one source of funding supports thesis research and that the dates of the two opportunities in question **do not** overlap. Thesis researchers in this case may still apply to multiple sources of research funding to enable potential co-funding opportunities.*
